Biennial Art Competition & Exhibition opens it’s call for entries.
The Asia Pacific Region is home to many colourful cultures and vibrant traditions that easily date back generations. While the recognition and acceptance of these communities has increased over recent years, the reality of the individuals living are still facing issues that have arisen through a long history of trade, discrimination, and environmental change.
Environmental Sustainability has become an increasingly urgent matter in these communities, and one that is not being addressed. From the concerns of Kiribati to the disappearance of East Island, Hawaii, and to the stories such as ‘Mama’s Bones’ and ‘There once was an Island’ which explore the hardships faced by pacific Islanders as environmental changes caused largely by the outside world, threaten to destroy their communities and way of life.
With a theme of Sustainability this year, the Centre of Austronesian Studies (COAST) invites student artists across the UK to enter the 2019 “More than land” Fine Art Competition. The aim of the competition is to begin the progression of insight and understanding of the Asia Pacific Islands resulting in artworks informed by issues of sustainability in Asia Pacific Indigenous Communities.
Current issues revolving around Sustainability, climate change, and the environmental impact on Asia Pacific Island Communities should inform artworks. Your research and understanding of these subjects should be covered briefly in your Artist Statement.
Our Judging panel will choose 10 winning works to be displayed in exhibition “More than Land: Sustainability in Asia Pacific Islands.” Out of the 10, one young artist will additionally be awarded £500.
The exhibition will accept a range of multimedia pieces from video, sculpture, painting, drawing and Performance from all age ranges.
